• Philip Glass is one of the founders of the Minimalist school of composition, which uses repetitive patterns to create a mesmerizing effect. He was one of many composers looking to find an alternative to atonality in the 1960s.
• His String Quartet No.4 is dedicated to Brian Buczak, an artist who died at age 33 of AIDS in the 1980s.  The piece was premiered at a memorial service for Buczak
