· Abbigail Richardson is an internationally sucessful composer who started her training at the University of Calgary. She has been the composer in residence for the Hamilton Symphony for over a decade. Eris is the Greek goddess of discord and strife.
· Les préludes (Preludes) is one of the first symphonic, or tone, poems - a new form of orchestral writing Liszt helped invent. It exchanges the standard forms and movements of the classical symphony for a "program" - a story, poem, or idea that the piece is built around. This piece is named after an ode by French poet Alphonse de Lamartine (Read the original French poem) about life's struggles and triumphs.
· PGSO concertmaster Lydia Hug is our soloist in this performance of Brahms’ only violin concerto, which, some say, was written "against, rather than for, the violin.” The fiendishly difficult concerto is a grand, symphonic work that balances virtuosity with deep musical substance.
